Driving Sustainability: How Lyan Packaging Supplies are Leading the Way in the Shift to HVO Fuel

Share

As part of their ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility, Lyan Packaging Supplies Limited T/A Icertech sought to find a more sustainable fuel alternative for their logistics operations.

In a move to enhance sustainability, Lyan Packaging Supplies Limited T/A Icertech has become the first customer of Certas Energy in Wrexham to transition their delivery vehicle from diesel to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).

Certas Energy are a progressive energy transition business, focused on providing industry leading fuel and new energy solutions as the world’s energy mix evolves towards a zero emissions future.

Hear more from Lyan Packaging on the driving force (pun intended!) behind this decision, considerations, and the benefits.

With our truck averaging around 80,000 miles annually for local deliveries and collections, we faced the challenge of significantly reducing our carbon footprint. Diesel, while effective, contributes substantially to greenhouse gas emissions. In order to meet our sustainability targets, we needed a cleaner, greener solution.

Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) emerged as the ideal choice. Produced from sustainable feedstocks like vegetable oils and animal fats, HVO offers:

  • 90% Reduction in Tailpipe Emissions: HVO slashes CO2 emissions, seeing our emissions cut from 31 tons to just 6 tons annually, greatly improving local air quality.
  • Local Environmental Benefit: Unlike carbon offsetting schemes, HVO provides a direct environmental benefit to the local community by reducing emissions at the source.

The decision to use HVO was driven by a thorough calculation of its environmental impact, marking a shift from carbon offsetting to carbon ‘insetting’—an investment with tangible benefits for their immediate surroundings” said Simon Morris, Sustainable Packaging Development Lead at Lyan Packaging Supplies.

The transition process was straightforward, with no modifications required to the truck or existing procedures. The benefits were clear:

  • Cost Considerations: We started using HVO in March 2023, and at the time the price of HVO was averaging 4p per litre more. Currently the cost difference has decreased, with HVO sitting in line with the cost of diesel.
  • Operational Efficiency: the switch to HVO has proven to be a plug-and-play solution with no notable operational disruptions. The truck has seamlessly adapted to the new fuel, maintaining its performance and efficiency. Our driver is able to fuel up at several different sites across the UK but mainly uses Wrexham and Trafford Park.
  • Ecovadis Platinum Accreditation: switching over to HVO played a significant role in reducing our scope 1 emissions, a contributing factor in achieving our recent Ecovadis Platinum rating.

The results speak volumes seeing with the switch from diesel to HVO seeing our CO2 emissions cut by 25 tons annually. In partnering with Certas Energy, we have demonstrated that achieving significant emissions reductions and improving local air quality is not only possible but also practical” said Natalie Davies, QEHS Manager at Lyan Packaging Supplies.
