How do we move away from polystyrene?
How do we move away from polystyrene?

Polystyrene is one of our most popular insulation solutions because of its consistent and reliable performance. However, as a company we have ambitions to reduce our (and your) environmental impact. To do this we have to understand the benefits and drawbacks of using polystyrene.

So why is polystyrene so popular?

  • Polystyrene is a popular because it is one of the best insulation performers and also protects your package from impacts.
  • It is a high-performing, versatile packaging choice, that handles moisture very well.
  • Polystyrene is used in sensitive and delicate applications, such as for medical applications.
  • It is also used for frozen products and those that require a long, consistent and reliable performance.

Whilst polystyrene is great for certain applications, it does come with some downsides. Firstly, it has a high impact on the environment. Polystyrene comes from non-renewable petrochemical sources, making it tricky to dispose of and taking a long time to breakdown in landfill and contributing to plastic pollution. Polystyrene is also very bulky and takes up a lot of space in your warehouse. These impacts must be considered when choosing the right packaging for your application.

The solution is to think about what you really need and want from your packaging:

  • Do you require 72 hours of performance, or are your products shipped on next-day delivery?
  • Do you need protection from impacts?
  • Are you shipping chilled products?
  • Are you using enough coolants?

When you consider the entire solution, you can then choose packaging with purpose.

We are committed to continued innovation and investment to develop a sustainable alternative to polystyrene. We are collaborating with academic research institutions to find and develop cutting edge materials and collaborate with industry partners to make this all possible. We will use our in-house testing facilities to qualify the performance of the products, and engage with you, our customers, to support testing and development of this product.

We are excited to develop our sustainable packaging range and hope you can join us on this journey.

Our team will support your decision making, with performance and environmental impact information of all our products, plus years of experience. Get in touch to have a conversation with them today and start your sustainable packaging journey.
